Behind every website lies a physical reality that is easy to forget: servers running day and night, in data centers that consume electricity and water. Digital technology now accounts for a growing share of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, and hosting is one of its heaviest items. Choosing a genuinely low-impact host is therefore no cosmetic detail: it is one of the most structural decisions you can take to reduce the carbon footprint of your online presence.

The trouble is that the word “green” has become a sales argument. A green leaf on a homepage costs nothing to add and says nothing about what has changed in the machine room. So that you are not swamped by the promises, here are the concrete criteria that separate a genuinely low-impact cloud from a coat of marketing paint.

What a data center really consumes

A data center does more than power servers. It also has to cool them constantly, because the heat the machines give off is considerable. That cooling often accounts for a large share of the facility’s total consumption. On top of that come the lighting, the uninterruptible power supplies and all the network equipment.

In concrete terms, your website draws energy with every visit: to store your files, to process the requests, to carry the data all the way to your visitor’s browser. The heavier your site and the more traffic it receives, the higher that consumption climbs. That is why hosting and sustainable design form an inseparable pair: an exemplary host will never make up for a poorly optimized site, and the reverse is just as true.

Renewable energy versus carbon offsetting

This is where the most important difference is decided, and the one greenwashing works hardest to blur. Two approaches coexist, and they are not worth the same.

The first is to actually power the servers with renewable energy, ideally through direct purchase agreements or the host’s own generation. It is the most virtuous path: the impact is cut at the source.

The second is to offset emissions by funding projects elsewhere, tree planting for instance. Offsetting has its uses, but it must never serve as an excuse to keep consuming without limit. A sincere host reduces first, then offsets what remains. When offsetting is the only thing on the table, it is often a sign that nothing has changed underneath.

PUE and the indicators to check

To get past the talk and into the concrete, one indicator sets the standard: PUE, or Power Usage Effectiveness. It measures the ratio between the total energy a data center consumes and the energy actually used by the servers. A PUE of 1 would be perfect, but unrealistic. The best-performing data centers approach 1.1 to 1.2, while aging facilities go well beyond 2.

Ask for that figure. A host that is genuinely committed shares it without difficulty. Check the energy source too, the existence of recognized environmental certifications, and the presence of quantified, dated commitments rather than vague slogans. Transparency is an excellent signal in itself: whoever measures honestly has nothing to hide.

The greenwashing to flush out

A few phrases should switch on a warning light at once. “100% green” with no detail on the method. “Offset through tree planting” as the sole argument. An ecological logo tied to no verifiable certification. Or promises that come with no measurable data at all.

A reliable host, by contrast, talks about PUE, where its electricity comes from, the lifespan of its hardware and recycling. Low-consumption servers, optimized cooling and a longer working life for the hardware count as much as the origin of the energy. The energy transition of the digital world is played out in these technical details, not in the visuals.

Performance and frugality go hand in hand

A common assumption holds that a green cloud must be slower. It is false. Genuinely green hosting, well designed, delivers the same performance as conventional hosting, sometimes better, because frugality pushes you to optimize every link in the chain. Recent hardware consumes less and works faster. Frugality and speed pull in the same direction.
