How much does SEO cost for a website? It is the question that keeps coming back, and the honest answer begins with: it depends. SEO is not a standardized product with a price printed on the label. Depending on the billing model, the scale of the work and how mature your site is, the investment varies a great deal. Rather than quote figures that would mislead, let us take the pricing models apart, so that you understand precisely what you are paying for, and what you get in return.
How SEO is billed
There are essentially two ways of charging for search engine optimization, each suited to different needs.
For us, the second of those models starts with the SEO Essentiel plan at €89 a month, VAT not applicable, article 293 B of the French tax code.
The first model is the one-off project. You pay for a bounded piece of work: an audit, a round of technical fixes, the rewriting of a batch of pages. It is useful for a specific need, but SEO is a long game, and an isolated action rarely has a lasting effect.
The second model, and the most common where the work is taken seriously, is the monthly plan. You pay a regular sum in exchange for continuous effort: optimization, content, monitoring, adjustments. This model fits the nature of SEO, which needs consistency before it bears fruit.
What SEO actually costs
On to the figures. In France, in 2026, a one-off SEO audit is billed at €500 to €3,000, depending on the size of the site and the depth of the analysis. Monthly support starts at around €300 a month with a freelancer, sits between €800 and €2,500 a month at a general-purpose agency, and passes €3,000 for a high-volume site or a fiercely competitive market. Below €200 a month, be wary: the human time the work requires simply is not there.
Our own plans are public, and deliberately sized for very small and small-to-medium businesses.
| Plan | What it covers | Price |
|---|---|---|
| SEO Essentiel | Up to 10 pages optimized, tags and metadata, Core Web Vitals, security and DNS, monthly Search Console report, 1 hour of optimization and 1 ticket a month | €89/month or €960/year, plus €399 setup |
| SEO Premium | Up to 30 pages optimized, competitor analysis, keyword strategy, editorial recommendations, monthly reports, 2 hours of optimization and 2 tickets a month | €149/month or €1,609/year, plus €690 setup |
The setup fee covers the initial audit, the overhaul of the tags, the technical fixes and the configuration of the tracking tools: the groundwork that does not need redoing every month. From then on, the monthly fee pays for continuous work, with no minimum term. For an isolated need, rather than a plan, a support ticket at €89 an hour or a pack of five hours at €399 is often enough. Amounts in euros, VAT not applicable, article 293 B of the French tax code.
A useful rule of thumb when you weigh it up: if one ranking you win brings you ten qualified leads a month and you convert two of them, the plan pays for itself as soon as the margin on those two clients exceeds the monthly fee. That calculation, not the headline amount, is what should decide.
What moves the price
For the same model, two SEO quotes can differ widely. Several factors explain the gaps.
The starting condition of your site, first. A recent, clean, fast site needs less work than an old, slow, badly structured one that first has to be refloated. Where you start from sets the effort required.
How competitive your sector is, next. Ranking in a local market with few contenders is more attainable than chasing hotly contested national queries. The stiffer the competition, the more work it takes.
The scope of the work, finally. Support that includes the audit, the technical side, the content and the link building is far more work than a simple optimization of the tags. The price reflects the real breadth of what is done.
In-house SEO or an agency
Should you bring SEO in-house or hand it to an agency? Both options have their logic, and their cost.
Going in-house means recruiting or training the skill, buying tools that are often expensive, and freeing up time on an ongoing basis. For a large organization with a high volume of content, that can be justified. For a very small or medium-sized business, the sums rarely come out that way.
Using an agency gives you access to multidisciplinary expertise and shared tools, without the fixed costs of a hire. You get a specialist’s work without carrying the whole weight of the skill yourself. For most businesses in Pau and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in south west France, it is the more reasonable trade-off.
The return on investment
Talking about the price of SEO without talking about its yield makes no sense. Search engine optimization is not an expense, it is an investment from which you expect a measurable return.
For comparison with a complete service, the detail of our SEO service is public.
Good rankings attract qualified traffic, meaning visitors with a genuine interest in what you offer. Unlike advertising, whose effect stops the moment the budget is cut, SEO builds lasting capital: a page that ranks well keeps drawing visitors long after it was written.
To judge the return, look past raw traffic: how many inquiries, quotes or sales does your SEO generate? It is that ratio between the investment and the concrete results that tells you whether your SEO is paying off. And done well, it usually pays off handsomely.
Spotting the false bargains
The SEO market is full of tempting offers that need decoding. A few signals should put you on your guard.
Be wary of promises of a guaranteed first position. Nobody controls Google’s algorithm, and any guarantee of that kind is naive at best and manipulative at worst. Be wary too of abnormally low prices: serious SEO takes human time, and a derisory price often hides automated methods that are risky, and sometimes penalized.
A reliable partner, by contrast, explains their method, sets realistic goals, reports back regularly and accepts that results are built over time. Transparency is the best indicator of seriousness.

Conclusion
The price of SEO depends on the model you choose, the state of your site, your market and the breadth of the work. Rather than looking for the cheapest, look for the most relevant: support that explains what it is doing, aims at realistic goals and generates a measurable return. That is how SEO becomes a profitable investment rather than a line of expenditure.
